Why is Script Analysis Important?

Recorded from set. Ignore the serial killer vibes, he's really nice, we promise!

Why does Script Analysis matter?

Our craft is 50% script analysis and 50% acting. You can be the best actor there is, but if your audition doesn't serve this project/this world/this story, they can't hire you. You must understand what the writing is asking for…not what you want it to be. Understand that your choices must be supported by the material, in service of the material.

Great script analysis skills are therefore essential, especially with self tapes where you don't get the benefit of a redirect. The thing is: you don't need a redirect, if you know how to decipher what the writer is asking of you!

If you find yourself needing to do multiple takes, over and over again, struggling to 'find it,' you don't have an acting problem, you have a script analysis problem. Once you know how to read the music, so to speak, auditions become fun and stress-free. You're now able to just BE...to simply listen and react honestly in the moment. It all begins on the page.

KC Clyde has been a working actor in Los Angeles & New York for the past 21 years. He has trained with some of the best teachers in the country in Scene Study, Meisner, Audition Technique, Alexander technique, Emotion Mapping, and more...for a truly comprehensive education.

Some of his most recent credits include A THOUSAND TOMORROWS (Series regular), Paramount's YELLOWSTONE (Recurring Guest Star), KUNG FU (Recurring Guest Star), DIABLO GUARDIAN (Recurring Guest Star), DO NO HARM (Recurring Guest Star, VERONICA MARS (Recurring Guest Star), SWALLOW YOUR BLISS (Guest Star), SEER (Guest Star), to name a few. These have made him sought after in the TV world, but it’s his work in Studio and Independent film that has given him a chance to truly get noticed. Films like EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY, starring opposite Karla Souza, where KC was singled out by the New York times, BIG KILL, a period piece starring opposite Jason Patrick, WAR PIGS, an action-packed WWII movie, starring opposite Oscar-nominee Micky Rourke, to name a few.

All of KC's experience, wisdom, and dedication are poured into the Clyde Bernardy Acting Studio, giving our students the ability to learn everything KC has picked up along the way as a working actor, and current information that is based on the realities of auditioning TODAY.

TESTIMONIALS

But don't take it form us...here's what working actors are saying about our Script Analysis Technique!

“In the smorgardsbord-land of acting classes to be found in this town, I think the Clyde Bernardy Acting Studio is quite a unicorn. KC’s understanding and processing of the material alone adds a depth to the work and to the conversations about how to approach an audition or role that is on another level, but also, I feel like this is a place that focuses on the work in relation to the industry and helps prepare you for that, which has helped me tremendously in regards to auditions and just navigating the business. I also feel like I can come in here and work out if I just need to sharpen something, or I’m looking to maybe try something new or different to add to my actor tool belt. But aside from craft, it’s the spirit of collaboration and the mental approach to what we do that I appreciate the most about CBAS. When I leave class with that spirit of collaboration, I show up on set with that spirit of collaboration and the mentality of being in service of the project: the character, the story, and my fellow actors, and I think my best work comes from nurturing that mentality. I tell everyone to go try CBAS to see for themselves, because it’s made all the difference for me.”

“I was lucky enough to meet KC a long time ago in an acting class where I was able to act alongside him and explore characters together. Even then, his ability to guide and be a selfless listener and partner was always extraordinary to me. To be able to learn from KC, then and now, is extremely fortunate. The way he understands scripts and writing is a gift. And the capacity he has to help you learn that world is invaluable. As an actor, to have a coach you can trust should be a priority. And having one be a fellow actor as gifted as KC is is just the cherry on top. An actor’s teacher.”

“Besides being a phenomenal actor and one of the kindest human beings I know—The way KC breaks down a script is nothing short of wizard-like..but then he tops that sorcery with the way he both inspires and empowers YOU to do the same. I have studied with quite a few studios/coaches throughout my career and not all have been as impactful- especially in such a short period of time. Without a doubt I’ve certainly grown to trust myself and my instrument much more since having the pleasure of working with KC- both in class and coaching.”

“"When I first met KC in class, I hadn’t booked any work in months. I didn’t realize how stale my work had become. I had fallen into the trap of being on autopilot, with no real depth behind my work. Many acting coaches teach actors one generic technique and don’t really see the individual they’re working with for who they are. That’s not KC. KC took the time to see me and get to know me. He knew what I needed. I needed to be set free and get more specific in my work. No one knows SPECIFICITY like KC. He dives deep into the script and makes it work for you! He doesn’t stay stuck in rules or line reads. He trusts in your individuality and allows you freedom to make your own choices as long as they have depth and specificity for you. Since working with KC, I am back to working consistently and feel so much more confident in my work. Thanks to KC I have regained trust in myself as an artist and have gained a love for acting beyond what I knew before meeting him. Work with KC! You won’t regret it!"”

“I have personally known KC for about 2 years now. Anyone can memorize lines and repeat them, but the greatest gift KC gave me as a coach was that he taught me the Art of Acting. Anyone who takes acting seriously knows that it’s not an easy task, but KC has made it a fun task. He connects with people that truly love acting. He loves art, and he portrays that in the way that he teaches. I’ve had many coaches throughout my 7 year career as an actor. Trust me a good coach is not easy to find. And if your're reading this then you hit the lottery.”

“I’m incredibly lucky I found KC when I did. I felt bogged down by techniques that had me juggling what felt like too many balls at the same time. I had no core to my technique and was grasping at straws when it came to building a character and breaking down scenes. He was integral in re-positioning my perspective of the craft and stripping it back down to the essentials. He helped refocus me on the crucial nature of specificity and helped me dismantle my bad habit of generalization. On top of catering greatly to each students personal needs as an actor, KC has an intoxicating passion for the craft. Be warned, it’s contagious. You will find yourself continually reminded of why you fell in love with acting in the first place and walk away from class feeling reinvigorated, inspired and ready to act the s#!@t out of whatever lies on the horizon ahead.”

“I love coaching with KC, and I do so every chance I get. I’ve always been amazed at his ability to look at a script and within minutes break it down and find interesting choices that in hours of studying on my own had eluded me. Besides being a talented teacher, he is also one of the finest actors I’ve met in my 11 years in Los Angeles. This allows KC to be able to communicate and direct his students in an accessible way that many other teachers seem to miss.”

“I don’t know if I’ve ever booked a Job without KC Clyde’s influence: from looking up to him as an actor, using his breakdown methodology and process to, of course, coaching with him personally. His breakdown process is like seeing what is written underneath the script, getting a more detailed glimpse into what the character wants from you as an actor. I leave every class inspired, and excited to discover more within the text and within my capacity as an actor. KC’s passion for the craft and collaborative process of acting is contagious, reminding you through the work how much you love what you do.”

“For years I was nervous and possibly scared to go in and audition. Then KC, who I always looked up to, said to me: “remember that an audition is not a test or a competition, it’s a casting director giving you 5 minutes to do what you love.” My perspective changed completely; I started approaching the work in a different light. KC and Nawal have built an acting studio (family) where they go the extra mile to give you the most information you can possibly have, and physically put you in front of people who are working and are successful in the business. The Clyde Bernardy Acting Studio is more than an acting studio, it’s a place where you learn the ins and outs of the business itself, pushed by people who love the craft of acting. So when you go into your next audition or you are preparing a role, you are informed and ready for everything. I owe a lot to this studio.”

“After going through it once and now on a second journey, I realize the label I gave it, “GOLD”, is true in every way. The second time around, I found nuggets that needed a deeper thought process. Examples: “SLOW DOWN”. I realized I was still speeding as if in search of something ephemeral that’d slip from me. No worries, the second time as I slowed down, i started getting it: Emotion, intellectualization, what’s my core, and what masks will I use and where. I understood for the first time how to find the arcs… this was an incredible experience. I felt it all in my heart, my bones, muscles and skin. But i know I will be repeatedly undertaking this journey until most of it resides in my body! Thank you, KC, and everyone else who worked to create this! You will create actors out of some of us who have been aspiring to be for a long time! Vee Kumari”
